MedShare International is dedicated to recycling surplus medical supplies and equipment for use by healthcare institutions in developing countries. To achieve this mission, MedShare International collects batch and single item supplies and equipment that are still valuable but no longer in demand in the United States due to procedural excess, technological change, regulatory requirements, or production overage, and distributes them to healthcare facilities in targeted developing countries.
Description:
MedShare International, a 501-(c)-3 non-profit organization, provides vital medical supplies and equipment to economically developing countries by recycling unneeded surplus from U.S. manufacturers, distributors and healthcare systems. MedShare recovers and delivers medical goods that are valuable and needed, but which would be discarded due to procedural excess, regulatory requirements or production overage. Shipments go to qualified healthcare facilities in developing countries and are customized by direct product orders from MedShare's stock by the recipient institutions. MedShare International affords U.S. healthcare providers and suppliers an environmentally and socially responsible alternative to disposal of medical materials, while simultaneously aiming to ensure that one hundred percent of the medical materials it ships are needed and can be used. MedShare International's programs serve healthcare facilities in developing countries, regardless of their religious or political affiliations, which provide medical care to the needy.
History:
MedShare International was established in late 1998 by A.B. Short, Bob Freeman and a group of concerned Atlanta citizens. They were motivated by two critical situations - the medical needs of underserved populations worldwide and the environmental threat of discarded surplus medical supplies, much of which was destined for incinerators or landfills. In May 1999, MedShare celebrated its first shipment of a forty-foot container full of medical supplies to Costa Rica. By the end of 2006, MedShare shipped a total of 295 containers over its history, and intends to continue this phenomenal increase in the months and years to come. MedShare has expanded its biomedical department and now employs a full time engineer who reconditions donated product and travels to selected recipient hospitals to provide onsite installation, operation and maintenance training. At its 48,500 square-foot Distribution Center in Decatur, Georgia, MedShare staff and volunteers manage the supplies and equipment collected weekly from over 20 local partner hospitals, as well as from hospitals and medical supply manufacturers and distributors around the country. In its brief history, MedShare has donated $35 million in recovered, surplus medical supplies and equipment to 89 countries, including: Colombia, Ethiopia, Ghana, Guatemala, India, Kenya, Liberia, Nigeria, Philippines and Ukraine. In addition to container shipments, MedShare supports volunteer medical teams by providing the basic supplies necessary to deliver quality, safe care to medically disenfranchised populations. Local medical teams visit MedShare’s onsite Medical Team Store and national teams place orders for items such as syringes, gauze, gloves and sutures. In its eight year history, MedShare has outfitted over 500 philanthropic teams of doctors and nurses.
