The Citizen Advocacy Program
[ View Opportunities ]
Last updated on July 8, 2008

The Citizen Advocacy Program is a community support system for individuals with developmental disabilities who are not able to advocate on their own behalf. Through case management services and volunteer advocates, the Program ensures that individuals with developmental disabilities have equal access to the supports and services which help them to be independent and integrated members of their community.

Description:
The Citizen Advocacy Program serves citizens with the developmental disabilities of mental retardation, cerebral palsy and epilepsy in Burlington, Camden and Gloucester counties in southern New Jersey. Services provided are case management and one on one volunteer advocates and are free of charge to the individual. Case managers help clients schedule appointments, complete applications, locate community resources and advocate for entitled benefits. Volunteers assist clients with goals of their choosing which may include reading, cooking, banking, or socialization. We match volunteers and clients very carefully as far as interests, geographical location and sex in order to facilitate a lasting friendship between the two people.

History:
For over 25 years, the Citizen Advocacy Program has been operating as a special program of The Arc of New Jersey, advocating for individuals with developmental disabilities in order to help them to access the services which will enable them to live as independently as possible.
