Tucson Community School's mission is to provide a creative learning experience emphasizing outdoor play and family participation in a safe environment which respects each child's uniqueness and individual learning style.
Description:
Tucson Community School (TCS) is a non-profit, parent-owned cooperative for the children of Tucson. Founded in 1948, it offers three year old, four year old and Kindergarten programs. The school maintains a consistent, child-centered program with developmentally-appropritate practices. The focus is learning through play both outdoors and indoors with an approach that promote a positive self-concept. Our grounds include extensive shady playgrounds for each age group, gardens, animals, and plenty of activities for large motor development. Our classrooms are designed to promote creativity and problem solving with areas for block construction, dramatic play, reading, art, easel painting, science exploration, group activities and work with manipulative toys.
The parents serve on the board of directors, assist the professional staff of teachers in the classroom and help maintain the school. They attend parent education meetings, create fund-raisers, and manage school committees.
History:
TCS was founded in 1948 by a group of Tucson parents. They hired an educator from the Bank Street School to be its first director. The school was constructed on this site in 1950. We continue to follow the philosophy and objectives as established by its founders. We were accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children in 1991, and have maintained that accreditation to this day.
