Marketing Intern: Branding and Design
Last updated on March 11, 2008

Project Description
The Chinatown YMCA has recently been approved through the San Francisco Planning Commission to move forward with a long-awaited capital project. Over the course of the next 18- 24 months, we need to develop the look and feel of our new YMCA; from the membership program to the interior of our building. Our new facility will have a balance between being a health and fitness center and a community center, and the fitness program supports our mission-driven youth, teen and family programs. We are looking for an intern to help us refresh the Chinatown YMCA “brand” to marry this existing 97-year legacy with the new modern building and an innovative community membership model.

Target Audience
We have a number of target audiences, each requiring a different “voice;”
• our current membership and donor bases,
• the Chinese immigrant community,
• professionals from the Financial District seeking a fitness membership,
• seniors in Chinatown and those who have moved away to other districts,
• local youth and teens, and
• non-members from surrounding neighborhoods such as Nob Hill and North Beach.

Required Deliverables
Working with our Marketing and Communications committee, the intern will accomplish:

  1. Refreshing our brand. Capture the feel of “honoring the legacy, building for the future” in a way that inherently captures the Chinese influence, but not necessarily overtly Chinese in nature. Finished product will include the establishment of a tagline and a logo to complement the existing YMCA logo (working within YMCA logo guidelines).
  2. Collateral. Develop a new look and feel for our print and web materials including:
• newsletter template
• program flyer template
• website (which must link into the greater YMCA of San Francisco website: www.ymcasf.org)
• membership package, and
• letterhead.
  1. Signage. Develop look and feel of donor and community boards, design and order boards.
  2. Instruction: A Style Guide will be developed to explain use of the established templates.
  3. Project Benefits:
The Chinatown YMCA is excited to find the right person for our project. We think this is an incredible opportunity to be part of a design team, to influence the look and feel of a new & renovated community center, and to gain real life experience in a branding project for a worthy non-profit organization. Our intern will be highlighted and acknowledged on our website, and a tagline or art credit will be given as appropriate on any collateral that is adopted by the committee.

    Required Proposal Format:

    1. Letter of Intent (1-2 pages): Please describe yourself, your vision, and why you are inspired to apply for this intern position. Include any initial thoughts regarding our project, and also describe your perception of and connection to “Community.”
    2. Portfolio Sample: Please include examples of relevant project work.

    3. Request for References:
Please submit 2-3 phone numbers of references who will attest to your relevant skills.
