The mission of the Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) is to improve the health and safety of communities across the country by organizing and utilizing public health, medical, and other volunteers.
Description:
The Davis County MRC is designed to assist and supplement existing emergency medical response and public health systems in emergencies. However, MRC volunteers may also be utilized in non-emergency situation such as parades, community fairs, speakers bureau and more. The primary goal of the Davis County MRC is to organize and train volunteers and healthcare professionals to respond during public health emergencies, enhancing local emergency personnel. Historically, people spontaneously volunteer to assist in emergencies/disasters. Spontaneous volunteers are often not familiar with the organization and structure of the existing local emergency response system and, therefore, may not be as effective and efficient in the provision of emergency medical services as members of organized response groups. Pre-identifying, credentialing and training MRC volunteers is essential to a successful and efficient emergency response.
History:
After the unprovoked and tragic events of September 11, 2001, thousands of Americans responded by volunteering to help in any way they could. Many more Americans asked, “What can I do to help?” Responding to President Bush’s call for service, Davis County Health Department Director Lewis R. Garrett started the Davis County Medical Reserve Corps (MRC). The Davis County MRC provides an opportunity for citizen volunteers (health professionals and others) to supplement existing public health, medical and emergency services resources. The Davis County MRC is designed to pre-credential and train volunteers to be prepared to assist in a public health emergency. Public health emergencies will require assistance from a number of volunteers, both medically and non-medically trained, to facilitate an organized and efficient response.
