The American Red Cross, a humanitarian organization led by volunteers and guided by its Congressional Charter and the Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross Movement, will help provide relief to victims of disaster and help people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies.

Description:
Each year, over one million Americans serve as Red Cross volunteers serving local community needs. Red Cross volunteers help people in emergencies, teach first aid and CPR courses, deliver emergency messages to family members of the armed forces and their families, distribute HIV/AIDS prevention material to youth, and many more acts of service. On average, the Greater Salt Lake Area Chapter helps more than 400 people every day.

History:
The Greater Salt Lake Area Chapter of the American Red Cross beginnings can be traced to May of 1898, when Emmeline B. Wells organized a group of 100 Utah women to provide comfort kits and meals to soldiers serving in the Spanish American War. As cavalry and artillery units left Salt Lake City for the war front, Red Cross Volunteers filled their knapsacks with home-baked goods and hand-sewn clothing. So began the American Red Cross' first century of service in Utah.

For over 100 years, the Greater Salt Lake Area Chapter of the American Red Cross has been proudly serving this community, constantly changing and adapting to meet the needs of the constituents throughout our service area, which includes Salt Lake, Tooele, Wasatch, Summit, South Davis, Washington, Kane, Uinta, Dagget and Duchesne Counties.
