Longmont Meals on Wheels
| Last updated on May 21, 2008 |
The mission of Longmont Meals on Wheels, Inc. is to assist individuals to live independently and increase their nutritional health by preparing and delivering nutritious meals utilizing community volunteers.
Description:
Longmont Meals on Wheels delivers meals to anyone in the Longmont area who has a limited ability to prepare their own meals. LMOW's primary mission is to help older adults remain independent, so most of our clients are home bound. We also deliver meals to anyone recovering from illness or hospitalization. Longmont Meals on Wheels is a non-profit agency which relies on the support of the community. Less than half of our revenue comes from client fees for meals. LMOW utilizes fundraising events, contributions and foundations in addition to support from Foothills United Way and the City of Longmont. We receive no state or federal funding.
History:
The concept of Meals on Wheels was developed in wartime England, 1939, when a group of women took meals to older people in their bombed out homes. The need for such a program was recognized in this country in 1954. Longmont Meals on Wheels has been serving local clients since March 1969. What began as a need recognized by a church parish worker soon became a need fulfilled, as various churches and representatives from the Longmont community joined together to provide meals to Longmont's homebound. The first meals were prepared by volunteers, as they are now. With over 300 volunteers and our 5 person staff, LMOW strives to provide the best nutrition possible to Longmont's senior and homebound population. We work to promote independence and good health among all those who use our service.
