Sister Carmen Community Center
| Last updated on May 19, 2008 |
The organizational mission of Sister Carmen Community Center is to provide assistance without discrimination to residents of East Boulder County who are in need. We have been serving the community for over 30 years. Our goals are to ensure that residents of Lafayette, Louisville, Superior, and Erie have food and other basic necessities, and to prevent homelessness by offering services that help to relieve financial stressors. We provide emergency assistance services with the hope to assist our clients in their progression towards self-sufficiency.
History:
The center's history extends back to early 1970's, when it was founded by Sister Carmen Ptaniak of the Sisters of Charity. In 1976, the Center officially opened its doors in downtown Lafayette. In 1977, a thrift store was added as a source of venue and a dignified means for low-income people to procure clothing, furniture, and household items. The Sister Carmen Community Center was incorporated as a non-sectarian 501(c)(3) in 1978. Though no longer a religious organization, Sister Carmen's name was kept in her honor. In 2002, we moved to a new facility built by the City of Lafayette on Baseline Road. Since then, our capacity to serve has increased each year. We continue to provide emergency food assistance services, and have added several other emergency assitance services.
