Through education and long-term mentoring, “I Have a Dream”® - Houston inspires at-risk youths to dream and empowers them to believe in themselves and succeed.
Description: We believe that an investment in a child promotes confidence, develops character, and expands values, thereby enriching lives and offering hope for a successful future. As such, I Have a Dream – Houston dedicates itself to inspiring and encouraging low-income, inner-city youth to achieve their full potential through education.
I Have a Dream – Houston is committed to:
• Inspiring children to value education as the bridge to a life of positive choices and self-sufficiency
• Promoting academic achievement
• Encouraging positive interaction among children, parents, and volunteers through creative, exciting, and rewarding experiences of learning and fun
• Providing hope through positive experiences, role models, encouragement, and caring support
• Serving as the catalyst to effectively pool the community’s abundant resources, including individuals, school districts, universities, corporations, and other community-based organizations
All of which is enhanced by strong leadership, committed volunteers, effective staff, and successful programs that are continually evaluated for effectiveness.
History: In 1988, I Have a Dream – Houston was born when a group of Houstonians came together to address the many obstacles facing low-income, inner-city children. They created the I Have a Dream - Houston program model that we still use today whereby a group of 50 elementary school students become “Dreamers.” We work with these student Dreamers for at least ten years -- through 12th grade and beyond -- to help them create and then to realize their educational dreams.
