Literacy Advance of Houston teaches adults to read, write and communicate in English so they can achieve their highest potential as parents, workers, citizens and community members.

Description:
Literacy Advance offers English literacy classes to speakers of other languages (ESL program) and to English-speaking individuals who want to improve their reading and writing skills (Adult basic Education, or ABE, program). We also have a Family Literacy program and offer instruction in basic computer literacy. All classes are taught by trained volunteers. No teaching qualifications, prior experience in this field or knowledge of a second language is required.

History:
Literacy Advance of Houston was founded in 1964 originally by a group of Houstonians who were concerned with the growing rate of illiteracy in Houston and outlying regions. The organization was incorporated in 1972 and became a United Way Agency in 1983. We are the oldest literacy organization in this region and also the only agency to rely solely on Volunteer Tutors for its programs.
