Skills For Living educates and mentors low-income families, developing essential skills and identifying resources in health care, relationships, resource management, and personal and career development to break the cycle of poverty.
Description: Skills For Living provides education and positive, practical mentoring to teach families how to define goals and implement strategies to enhance their lives and the lives of their children. S4L works with low-income Habitat for Humanity families and high school students in the Houston area. Each month we provide workshops, mentoring, community development and programs for families and students focused on career, financial literacy, personal development, and relationships. We currently need volunteers, who can commit 40 hours a year, to mentor families and teens or assist with PR, Communications, Fund Raising, and Administration. If you are interested in mentoring, attend our monthly Power Workshops (3rd Tuesday evening of each month) to experience our programs and meet other mentors. Call 713-782-9974.
History: Skills for Living grew out of the need to provide financial guidance to Habitat for Humanity families qualify for and retain their homes. S4L received non-profit status in December 2004. We are a "toddler" in non-profit years, but we have attracted 100+ volunteers from all walks of life and have an active committee structure that supports our rapidly growing organization.
