We are a non-profit environmental advocacy and education organization committed to citizen empowerment and community health and sustainability. Our focus areas include building environmentally sustainable communities, protecting water resources and promoting ecologically restorative businesses and organization. To those ends we partner with health and educational institutions, businesses, faith communities, local governments and other non-profits for effective integration of resources and services.
Description:
We are a staff of eight, nearly 1000 members and a legion of fabulous dedicated volunteers who serve on our board, work on issue committees, help with programs and projects and assist staff and interns with work in the office. Programs include Rain Gardens of West Michigan; Adopt-A-Stream & Stream Monitoring; Grand River Watch; Sustainable Food & Agriculture Systems; Religion, Ecology & Spirituality; West Michigan Sustainable Business Forum; and advocacy, education & information and referral services.
History:
The organization began in 1969 out of the vision and deep concern of the citizens of west Michigan over the degradation of and the potential harm toward the environment and human health. From this time the West Michigan Environmental Action Council has continued as a crucial voice for change and the protection of human and ecological health.
