Baxter Community Center seeks to reveal God's love by responding to human needs in its community through effective programs and partnerships. Baxter's response primarily includes addressing immediate needs, assisting individuals to become responsible, productive and self-sufficient, and affirming the positive qualities in individuals and the community.
Description:
Baxter Community Center is an "island of hope", a place where determined residents can seek help to better themselves and their community. For more than thirty-five years, programs at Baxter Community Center have given hope to a neighborhood committed to finding solutions to some of society's most challenging problems. The Center provides services to low-income families and individuals. It addresses immediate needs, offering food and clothing, daycare and healthcare.
History:
Baxter Community Center was founded in 1967 as Community Center, Inc. It was originally established to help relieve racial tension and meet other needs among the underprivileged in Grand Rapids. It began as a program of recreation and tutoring and soon preschool classes, day care for children, adult literacy and counseling were added. The original message was "to reveal God's love by Christian witnessing to the spiritual, physical, emotional, social and academic growth of the less fortunate, not only in words, but also in deeds."
