As a volunteer you could make a tremendous difference in some of these families lives. Last tax season, a volunteer explained that she "saw women and men crying and elated because of the amount of the refunds." Another volunteer shared the story of one client who received over $5,000 in refunds. This client was able to keep her house out of foreclosure. We need volunteers to make our Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Sites run. As a volunteer you can be a part of stories like the one above. Your commitment would be from January - April (the tax season), approximately four hours a week. At a VITA site you would prepare tax returns for low income families. The returns will be completed on a computer using Taxwise software and then filed electronically. Training will be provided. Remember the story above? These kind of stories float around our VITA sites. These families desperately need this money, that is rightfully owed to them through both federal and state income tax credits. KCTCC works with its volunteers, and the community by placing many different sites throughout Kent County. KCTCC tries to place the tax sites near the volunteers homes or places of employment. Look for one near you so you can volunteer today! The only qualifications that we require of our volunteers is a willingness to help! Previous tax knowledge is helpful, but is not required. Also basic computer knowledge is a plus. Twenty hours of IRS training and Self-Study training materials are provided. There will also be on-site help if problems arise. Adequate training is always provided! This is an excellent opportunity for Accounting college students to gain a work-study experience or service learning credits! If you belong to any kind of social organization this would be a wonderful opportunity to volunteer as a group!
