New Choices/New Options projects provide career development services for single parents, displaced homemakers, single pregnant women and individuals interested in nontraditional careers. These projects offer services to assist individuals to prepare for high-skill/high-wage jobs or occupational training programs that will enable them to support themselves and their families.
Description:
There are 27 projects in Pennsylvania which are funded through state funds administered by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. All projects offer career counseling and support services to help participants prepare for the job market. Services are offered free of charge. Career counseling is offered through a 60 hour group career guidance workshop offered 5 times each year. Graduates receive individual continued support and counseling for job search and career training.
History:
New Choices/New Options started in Lancaster County in 1985 as a result of a community study by the Junior League, the YWCA, and the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center to meet the needs of displaced homemakers. Services have been expanded to include single parents and individuals interested in nontraditional careers.
