History:
Since its inception in May of 2003, The Home Front Cares (THFC) has provided help to more than 1200 military families valued at $800,000. Last year THFC spent nearly $400,000 in support programs. To accomplish this mission, funds, goods and services are solicited from the community and distributed to needy families through non-profit and support organizations that serve the military. The privacy and dignity of families are maintained in The Home Front Cares' program.
The start of military action in Iraq on 20 March 2003, spurred two retired Air Force Colonels, Bob Carlone and Joe Henjum, to initiate plans for the start of The Home Front Cares program.
The initial action was to brief the boards and memberships of the Military Officers' Association of America (formerly TROA) and the Retired Enlisted Association (TREA). Both chapters enthusiastically endorsed the concept.
When the Military Affairs Council (MAC) of the Chamber of Commerce endorsed the concept, numerous civic organizations expressed interest to assist needy military families and become sponsors.
The program was announced to the public on 13 May 2003 at the Colorado Springs' City Hall by Mayor Lionel Rivera, with a large group of local and military organizers present.
