The Women for Women mission statement is to give love, acceptance and hope to fistula victims primarily through training, housing and nourishment. Our vision is to do our part to help eradicate fistula in our lifetime in Ethiopia and throughout the world.

Description:
The Women for Women Foundation is a non-profit,non-governmental,fully humanitarian organization based out of Colorado Springs. It is gaining support and recognition worldwide. It is devoted to the needs of women suffering from obstetric fistula. We are currently working in Ethiopia and are the only ones addressing this problem. The organization holds various fundraising activities throughout the year in order to help support the Trampled Rose Outreach in Ethiopia.(A country which has the highest maternal death and disability rate in sub-Saharan Africa) We are always interested in volunteers who share a heart to help. The project has grown to include not only the Trampled Rose,a shelter for those awaiting obstetric fistula surgery, but a series of entrepreneurship programs (Phase II) so that the women have the educational opportunity to learn self supporting skills. Most recently a Phase III was implemented. This entails going into the countryside in hopes of stopping fistula at it's source by education. So far over 5,000 have been reached. More information is available on our website at www.trampledrose.org

History:
While traveling in Ethiopia as a tourist, local Colorado Springs resident, Rebekah Kiser encountered a woman who was homeless, isolated and hopeless due to a medical condition called obstetric fistula,a devastating but cureable affliction. It is the result of prolonged labor in which the unborn child blocks blood flow to the birth canal and surrounding tissues. A fistula (hole) forms, causing the woman to leak urine and/or feces uncontrollably until they receive proper medical treatment. They are considered cursed and become abandoned outcasts, shunned by their family and villages. Those who hear word of the Fistula Hospital make their way into the city of Addis Ababa, far from their rural homes.Because there are over 10,000 new cases each year and the hospital can only treat 1,200, most often there is a lenghty wait before they can be helped. They found themselves alone, forced to live on the dangerous streets with no where safe to go and at risk for further medical complications, including HIV. Kiser returned to the U.S. and shared the plight of our sisters in Africa. A group of women agreed to take action. The Trampled Rose Outreach was opened in Feb. 2006. It operates in conjunction with the hospital. They notify us when patients need to be picked up and then they are brought to the compound and provided basic shelter, education, nutritious food and lots of love while they are waiting for their surgery and a chance for a new life. So far over 1,000 women have been helped.
