Silver Key Senior Services is a private Colorado nonprofit, human service agency. The mission of Silver Key is to serve as the conscience of the community in partnership with all our stakeholders in the greater Colorado Springs area to find and implement ways to ensure that the elderly are aging safely with dignity and independence. This is accomplished by providing programs and services that promote the well-being and self sufficiency of the elderly.
Description:
Silver Key serves the elderly in many ways including Transportation, Meals On Wheels, Residential Care, Personal Care, Live In Care, Guardianship, Companionship, Social Services, Maintenance, Commodities and Food Programs, Respite Care, Errand Running, and Health Appliance Loans. Our volunteers offer their friendship, skills, abilities, time, and concern in many ways including being a companion shopper, painting, raking leaves, delivering food, driving a Silver Key van, cleaning a home, or running errands (to name a few). We have one-time opportunities for individuals and groups as well as opportunities to volunteer on a regular basis.
History:
In 1970, a local woman named Mrs. Meyers had put her mother into a nursing home. When she saw the conditions in the nursing home were somewhat dismal, she felt that there was a gray cloud over her situation. She was looking for a key that could unlock the silver lining to this gray cloud, a "Silver Key" that could improve the situation for her mother. She formed a group of volunteers that originally focused on companionship with the elderly in nursing homes. However, after hiring our first Director in 1971, President Emeritus Mikki Kraushaar, Silver Key has grown into the multi-faceted organization that it is today.
