The mission of The Arc of the Pikes Peak Region is to protect the rights of individuals with developmental disabilities through Advocacy, Guardianship, Judicial Advocacy and Education.
Description:
The Arc of the Pikes Peak Region provides services to individuals with developmental disabilities and their families. Our Guardianship Program provides a legal guardian for 65 incapacitated adults in El Paso County. Our Advocacy Program provides services to over 1,000 people every year, working to ensure that they are receiving the services necessary to live a full life. We advocate in the schools, in the courts, and in every day life. We provide education services to law enforcement and to people with developmental disabilities and their families.
History:
The Arc of the Pikes Peak Region was originally founded in 1955 as the El Paso County Association for Retarded Children, by a group of parents of children with developmental disabilities who were frustrated with the limited service options available for their children. Many long hours went into convincing local leaders, other parents, schools, and anyone else who would listen, that good things should, could and would happen for their children if people just committed to doing the right thing.
The name of the organization was changed seven years ago when The Arc of the United States urged local chapters to join them in responding to requests from self-advocates to remove the label ‘retarded’ from the literature of the national advocacy organization. Adopting ‘people first’ language is an ongoing movement within the human service field and one that The Arc of the Pikes Peak Region embraces fully.
The Arc of the Pikes Peak Region is currently staffed by 8 full time and 2 part time employees and is governed by our Board of Directors (volunteers including parents of individuals with developmental disabilities, public defenders, law enforcement officials, lawyers, accountants, school administrators, host home providers, teachers, etc.)
