Founded in 1938, the March of Dimes is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the health of babies by preventing birth defect, premature birth and infant mortality. We work to achieve our mission through research, community services, education and advocacy.
Description:
Since 1981, the incidence of premature birth has grown by 30 percent. Prematurity is now the leading killer of newborn babies and, more than half the time, its causes are not known. Prematurity is more common and serious than most people think. That’s why the March of Dimes has launched the Prematurity Campaign. Over seven years, we will invest $75 million in research and education to address prematurity. The goals of the Prematurity Campaign are to reduce the incidence of prematurity and raise public awareness of prematurity as a serious health problem. To learn more about prematurity, Colorado campaign activities (including Prematurity Awareness Month and the statewide professional education conference) and how you can participate in this important endeavor, visit us at marchofdimes.com/Colorado or contact your nearest Chapter office.
History:
The March of Dimes was founded by one of history’s greatest leaders, President Franklin D. Roosevelt. FDR fought World War II, the Great Depression and polio – the epidemic that crippled him and thousands of other Americans. The same fighting spirit is alive today in the March of Dimes volunteers and staff who work to give all babies a healthy start.
