Cat Rescue of Maryland, Inc. primary mission is supporting the caretakers of feral cat colonies who are doing, or who want to do, TNR (trap, neuter, release) with their colonies.
Description:
CROM is an all volunteer organization whose primary mission is supporting the caretakers of feral cat colonies. Feral cats are cats that were born outside, have never lived with humans, and are quite wild. They tend to congregate in colonies around food sources such as dumpsters. Unless they are spayed and neutered, they can have many kittens. The kittens often suffer and many do not survive. The mother cats who have insufficient nutrition and too many pregnancies also suffer. So do the male cats who fight amongst themselves and spread disease. Many colony caretakers are dedicated to their colonies. Often they provide food, water and shelter to the cats at their colonies, They do not want to see the cats eradicated but they do want to stop the suffering by getting the cats altered. This is commonly referred to as TNR (trap, neuter, release). However, they often don't have the funds for trapping equipment and vet bills. That is where CROM can help. We concentrate on raising money to buy that equipment and pay those vet bills. The caretakers do the trapping and delivering the cats to the vet. We do not operate a shelter and do not take cats for adoption. We work solely with feral cat colonies. Our volunteers primarily work on fund raisers (1) assembling mailings (2) working at yard sales (3) manning booths at pet expos and cat shows (4) doing grant requests. Some of our volunteers also provide unique services such as making toys to sell. We welcome all volunteers who are willing to pitch in. All we ask is that you be reliable.
History:
CROM is an all volunteer 501(c)(3) organization founded in January 1993 by Maryanne Dubbs, after she had completed altering her first colony. With the help of the Cat Hospital at Towson (CHAT) she trapped and vetted 30 cats at that colony and provided food, water and shelter there until the last cat was gone. She admits she never intended to do it again. But after her beloved cat Beethoven died in October 1992, she went to a local apartment house complex to rescue a litter of kittens in Beethoven's memory. Once on the scene she couldn't resist doing TNR with that colony. During that project she incorporated CROM and applied for tax exempt status. Ms. Dubbs works full-time and calls CROM her "hobby" but it's a lot of work. CROM still works with CHAT and also now works with the SPCA's spay neuter program. Ms. Dubbs heads up the mailings, pet expos and cat shows while Luci Regrut handles grants and Bonnie Newton is in charge of yard sales.
