To protect whales, dolphins and all marine life from deadly active sonars and other sources of human generated noise pollution.

Description:
Do you feel strongly about protecting marine life and our living oceans? Seaflow is an organization dedicated to protecting ocean life from human-generated threats.

There is a crisis today in the world’s oceans. Whales, dolphins and other sea life are threatened by extremely loud noises caused by military, industrial, and commercial operations.

Active sonar and "airgun" blasting can maim and kill with underwater noises that are millions of times more intense than whales, fish or human divers can withstand.

Seaflow is a growing community of concerned citizens who are dedicated to protecting the living oceans of our planet. We work locally, nationally and internationally to raise awareness and promote public participation.

Join us in our mission to stop harmful underwater noises that threaten the web of life.

History:
Seaflow was founded about 6 years ago with the mission of stopping LFA (low frequency active sonar used by the Navy), which is harmful to whales and dolphins.

Seaflow’s mission has grown to include all harmful human-generated ocean noise pollution, which we now know also affects fish and the entire web of life in the ocean.

Seaflow has an active grassroots community and hosts monthly meetings at our Sausalito office the first Monday evening of the month.

Examples of recent local accomplishments:
• Seaflow crafted the Marin County resolution against Navy sonars, which was passed unanimously by the Board of Supervisors in April 2005. (There are plans to take it to other counties and eventually the state level). The only other places in the world with resolutions are San Francisco, Hilo, and Maui.
• Seaflow crafted the language regarding harmful ocean noise for the California Ocean Management Plan, which will be used by other coastal states to draft similar plans.

Examples of national accomplishments:
• Seaflow took the lead creating the NAONC (North American Ocean Noise Coalition) consisting of major environmental groups across the USA who have concerns about ocean issues. Seaflow schedules conferences and coordinates their collaboration.
• Seaflow crafted language regarding the effects of harmful ocean noise for Senator Barbara Boxer’s Oceans bill.
• Seaflow volunteers and board members have gone to Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. to advocate for ocean noise regulation.

Examples of international accomplishments:
• Seaflow is making its third trip to the United Nations conference (UNICPOLOS) in New York this month with our IONC (International Ocean Noise Coalition). Seaflow works with activists from three different continents to educate delegates and advocate for international regulation of human-generated ocean noise.
• This year Seaflow led our third group trip to Baja for close encounters with whales.

Current Projects:

• Seaflow is developing a project to help safeguard our three National Marine Sanctuaries in Northern California including Gulf Farallones, Cordell Bank, and Monterey Bay from growing ocean noise pollution. In 2008, we’ll begin leading a collaborative process involving marine sanctuary stakeholders, representatives, scientists, and the public in order to make recommendations for ocean noise regulation, scientific research priorities, and public education campaigns about ocean noise pollution. We hope this process will serve as a model for the protection and preservation of National Marine Sanctuaries globally.
