Macomb Literacy Partners (MLP) is helping to eliminate adult illiteracy by training volunteers who provide one-to-one tutorial instruction for adults who read below a level of functional literacy.

Description:
After participating in 3-4 sessions (14 hrs.) of tutor training, volunteers are paired with an individual seeking reading help. Based upon the student's literacy level and goals (defined at student intake), materials and an educational plan are prepared for each tutor/student pair. Tutors and students meet two hours per week, in public sites throughout our community. For example, small meeting rooms in churches, libraries, schools, community centers.

History:
Macomb Literacy Partners was created in 1984. The Macomb County Library serves as its host agency and the Suburban Library Cooperative provides fiscal agency. All resources are dedicated to direct services to clients, both volunteers and adult new readers. MLP is a 501(c)(3) organization with a volunteer governing Board of Directors comprised of community leaders.
