Western Arizona Council of Governments (WACOG), Area Agency on Aging Region IV serves Yuma, Mohave and La Paz Counties. The Area Agency on Aging serves as advocate, planner and source of funding for Home and Community Based services for those people 60+ and/or under 60 and disabled.
Description:
The Area Agency on Aging contracts with local non-profit agencies for services such as transportation home care, case management, nutrition and caregiver services just to name of few. The WACOG Aging and Disability Helpline is available by calling our Central Intake/Information and Referral service. Call 1-800-782-1886 in order to reach an information and referral specialist. The State Health Insurance Program (SHIP) provides benfits counseling,assistance, education and support to individuals in need of information regarding their Medicare benefits. Presentations on Medicare, Medicaid and Fraud Prevention are made available to service groups and the general public when requested. The Ombudsman program provides advocacy and assistance to individuals who reside in long term care or assisted living facilities. The WRAP ( WACOG Ride and Assistance Program ) is available for those persons 60 and over who do not have a car and cannot access public or dial-a-ride services. Mileage reimbursement is available for WRAP drivers. Contact the Aging and Disability Helpline at 1 800 782 1886 for more information. The WACOG Volunteer Services Program is available for individuals 18 and over who want to contribute to their community through volunteerism. Service groups, non-profits and other entities looking for volunteers can join the WACOG Volunteer Services Program and our volunteer services staff will match a propsective volunteer to a registered volunteer site.
History:
Western Arizona Council of Governments was formed in 1967 as a tri-county intergovernmental agreement. The Community Action Program, Head Start and the Area Agency on Aging all serve under the umbrella of WACOG. Community Action Programs as administered through the Human Services Department of WACOG provide case management for low income families. Also provided through WACOG Human Services is rent and utility assistance, home repair and weatherization programs for low income people and/or families. The Area Agency on Aging is a result of the Older Americans Act which was created by Congress and signed into law by Lyndon B. Johnson in 1965 in order to establish programs and services for the elderly.
