The mission of Compass House is to provide runaway and homeless youth with safe shelter and services in an atmosphere that supports dignity, respect and self-reliance, through a voluntary and mutually agreed upon process.

Description:
Compass House has two programs for runaway and homeless youth. We operate a 13 bed emergency shelter, 370 Linwood Ave in Buffalo)for youth (both male and female)12 through 17 years of age. Open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year the emergency shelter program provides food, shelter, clothing, crisis counseling, family and individual counseling, referrals, advocacy and aftercare. A 24-hour help line operates from this program to provide immediate access to safe shelter, crisis counseling, information and referrals.

In 2005, this program provided shelter and services to 305 youth in crisis. An additional 916 youth and community members were provided with crisis counseling, information, and referrals.

Our second program, The Compass House Resource Center, (1451 Main Street, Buffalo,)is a non-residential case- management program for homeless youth, or youth at risk of homelessness, 16 through 20 years of age. This program open Monday thru Friday from 9am to 5pm (3 days a week until 7pm.)and offers the following: assessment & case management;crisis counseling, individual, family & group counseling; referrals, advocacy and aftercare; positive social & recreational activities;and individual & group independent living skills instruction. The Compass House Cafe is operated out of the Resource Center to provide healthy meals and snacks. In 2005, the Resource Center provided Case Management and services to 224 homeless youth.
Both programs offer internships and volunteer opportunities and welcome your participation.

History:
Compass House was founded in 1972 by the Trinity Episcopal Church parishioners & members of the Junior League of Buffalo. Compass House is a not-for-profit that is a voluntary, private agency with 28 full-time staff members. Approximately 80 to 100 Volunteers and Interns contribute more than 5,700 hours of their time to Compass House annually.
