History:
Founded in 1958 by retired California educator, Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus, AARP is a private, nonprofit 501 (c) (3) membership organization incorporated in the Distriact of Columbia. AARP (formerly known as the American Association of Retired Persons) today represents more than 35 million members. About half of our members are working, either full or part-time, while the others are retired. Nearly a third of our members are under the age of 60; those 60 - 74 comprise 46% and 21% are 75 and older. AARP is also a nonpartisan organization; we do not have a political action committee. Neither the Association nor any officer, volunteer or member speaking for the Association may endorse, oppose, or contribute financially to a candidate for public office or specific political party.
