The mission of the Woodland Council is to encourage long term woodland stewardship and promote greater knowledge and appreciation of the forest resources in Olmsted County.
Description:
We welcome anyone who is interested in forestry. We presently have 25 members made up of landowners, teachers, state and local government employees, and others. There are no membership dues. DNR foresters currently handle most of the administrative tasks of the organization. We have sponsored and organized forestry field days and seminars covering various forestry topics, collected tree and shrub seed to provide for local seed source planting stock, completed a tree inventory for a small community, sponsored youth attending environmental camps, and worked with staff at local schools on forest management activities and sponsored volunteer buckthorn control projects in city parks. As a group we have toured direct seeding sites in Iowa, General Andrews Nursery, Webster Industries in Bangor, Wisconsin, and the Forest Products Laboratory in Madison, Wisconsin. We usually meet in the conference room of the Department of Natural Resources Regional Headquarters building in Rochester, MN. We meet at 4.30 in the afternoon and try to keep meetings to one hour. There is not a regular meeting day, but we generally meet every six to eight weeks.
History:
The Zumbro Valley Woodland Council is a non-profit organization that promotes forest stewardship in the Olmsted County area of Southeast Minnesota. We are currently a chapter of the Minnesota Forestry Association, but remain autonomous. We promote multiple use, "working woodlands", but value biodiversity and all sustainable land management activities that retain the productivity of the land. Our first meeting was held in January of 1996.
