The vision of ZooMontana is to become one of the worlds outstanding zoological and botanical institutions specializing in northern latitude or temperate species and provide our community and region with environmentally focused cultural, educational and recreational experiences.
Our mission is to create for all our guests an enjoyable, recreational, and educational experience while providing quality care for the animal and plant collections and appropriate propagation programs for species that are in need.

Description:
ZooMontana is located on a 70-acre site on Shiloh Road, at the west end of Billings, Montana. The immediate region served by ZooMontana consists of Montana, east of the continental divide, and northern Wyoming. There is no credible zoo within an eight hour drive in any direction. The site was acquired from the state of Montana in 1985 for exclusive use as a non-proft zoological/botanical garden, and lies just off Interstate 90.

History:
ZooMontana is a regional zoological/botanical garden, which is the only one of its kind in the Northern Rockies. The concept of ZooMontana was born in 1981 and the Zoo was incorporated as a private, non-profit organization in 1982. The Zoo is governed by a board of 27 directors and supported by the ZooMontana Zoological society, which exceeded 1,400 memberships in 1994.
At the time of ZooMontana's conception, it was decided that the institution should be more than a recreational collection of animals and plants. The citizens of the Northern Rockies live in a region which has abundant wildlife and the people of the region are very conscious of this resource. At the same time, there are many wildlife-human conflicts and the region has no center which is exclusively devoted to either conservation education or actual conservation efforts. Therfore, it was decided at the outset that ZooMontana was to be a place where the interdependancy of people, plants, and wildlife could be demonstrated. The permanent habitats/exhibits within ZooMontana are used to educate the public about animals in their broadest context: zoological, ecological, and cultural. Additionally, ZooMontana is committed to providing interpretive exhibits and programs addressing cultural themes as they relate to the natural world, through interdisciplinary formats exhibits, lectures, workshops, demonstrations, and participatory activities for audiences of all ages. From these ideals, the goals of the institution evolved.
ZooMontana strives to attain innovation and excellence. The primary goals of ZooMontana include (1) the construction of a world-class zoological garden with respect to the quality of the habitats and animal management programs, (2) the development of a comprehensive educational program, and (3) the development of a sound conservation biology program. These goals are embrased in teh Zoo's mission statement.
