Charlotte County 4-H Foundation creates supportive environments for diverse youth and adults to reach their fullest potential.
Description:
The Charlotte County 4-H program is based on the premise that for youth to learn, and enjoy learning, they must have certain needs met. These include feeling safe in the location, having positive relationships with adults involved with the program, having peers involved with them, being able to practice skills, and having the sense of giving back to the community. 4-H staff and volunteers strive to meet these needs during all 4-H sponsored activities and events. A unique aspect of the 4-H program is the family involvement. Regardless of the family structure, all youth are encouraged to have members of their families participate in the programs. This offers parents an opportunity to work with their children in a positive setting, as well as provide role models for the younger siblings. Much of the 4-H programming is delivered by volunteers. Using the national standard of a value of $17.55 per volunteer hour, 4-H volunteers gave over $40,000 worth of manpower to the 4-H program in 2005. These volunteers know that they are making a difference in the lives of Charlotte County youth. 4-H is training the future leaders of the community. Competency in basic life skills helps to ensure that youth will feel competent in other areas of their development and to succeed.
