The Mission of the NH Department of Corrections is to provide a safe, secure, and humane correctional system through effective supervision and appropriate treatment of offenders, and a continuum of services that promote successful re-entry into society for the safety of our citizens and in support of crime victims.

Description:
The NH Department of Corrections oversees the operations of all entities within this state agency. This includes approximately 8,000 adult offenders in four state prisons, four transitional housing units, the Secure Psychiatric Unit, and in the Division of Field Services for those under supervision of probation or parole.

The four state prisons are NH State Prison for Men, Concord; NH State Prison for Women, Goffstown; Lakes Region Facility, Laconia; Northern NH Correctional Facility, Berlin.

Transitional Units(for work release and community re-integration) are Calumet House, Manchester; Transitional Work Center, Concord; North End House, Concord; Shea Farm, Concord.

Central Office and Field Services are headquartered in Concord.

History:
Since 1810, New Hampshire has recognized the need for a state prison. Construction was authorized and by 1812, a prison near the Concord courthouse completed and occupied by the first state inmate.

By 1874, studies for a new prison location and structure led to ground breaking in 1878 with completion and occupancy of the NH State Prison during 1880.

1973 saw Shea Farm Halfway House open as the first housing unit away from the state prison grounds. Calumet House opened in 1979.
The NH Department of Corrections was created by RSA 21-
H and became operational on December 19, 1983. The 1980's witnessed major new housing construction and extensive renovations to the state prison as the inmate population rapidly increased.

From 1880 to 1941, female inmates were housed within the state prison in Concord. There were never more than six female inmates in state custody. From 1941 through the late 1980's, female inmates were housed out of state or in county jails. In 1989, the NH State Prison for Women opens.

Inmate overcrowding during the 1980's and the need to develop goal-oriented programs led to the opening of the Lakes Region Facility in 1991 on the site of the former Laconia State School.

By 1994, the NH adult inmate population surpassed 2,000 and additional inmate housing needed. Construction began in 1998 for the Northern NH Correctional Facility with opening and occupancy in early 2000.
