The Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation uses baseball and softball-themed programs to build character and teach critical life lessons to young people residing in America's most distressed communities.
Description:
By combining the principles represented by the Ripken name, the power of Cal Jr. as a modern day hero and role model, and the universal appeal of baseball, the Foundation works to create programs and facilities that positively impact youth in need. We strive to provide once-in-a-lifetime experiences that use the magic of the big leagues to inspire kids to be the best that they can be...to dream a dream that someday they can achieve great things. The challenge Foundation faces is sizable. Today, more than 7 million American kids struggle with poverty, obesity, poor quality of education, the lack of adult role models or the persistent presence of drugs and violence. The Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation provides baseball and softball-themed programs that help instill leadership qualities, a strong work ethic, sportsmanship and healthy habits to kids from disadvantaged backgrounds across the nation. The Foundation supplies equipment, funds and support to organizations, communities and schools seeking to promote youth baseball. Along with programs targeted towards disadvantaged youth, the Foundation also trains youth coaches in "The Ripken Way" to help them extend their influence beyond the playing field.
History:
The Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, founded in 2001 by members of the Ripken family in memory of their patriarch Cal, Sr. Cal Ripken, Jr. and his brother Bill worked to develop the Ripken teaching methodology, based on their father's teaching which stresses four fundamental principles: Keep it Simple, Explain the Why, Make it Fun and Celebrate the Individual. Cal and Bill Ripken took the devotion and methodology their father had for youth baseball and applied it to the work of the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation. Today, the Foundation benefits thousands of youth from disadvantaged backgrounds through a variety of community efforts.
