To expose, eliminate, and prevent discrimination against women and to assist women in attaining full equality of opportunity in all aspects of life.
Description:
The commission advocates for women on personal, organizational, and policy levels through community awareness and social action. The commission will focus on how our diverse communities are effected by gender inequality. To implement such activities as are necessary to achieve the mission of the Commission, including to
*Serve as a clearing house by collecting, coordinating and disseminating information concerning women.
*Consult and confer with the Mayor, City Council and the County Board of Supervisors on matters relevant to the Commission.
*Study and examine by meetings, conferences, public hearings and other appropriate methods those conditions indicating discrimination or prejudice encountered by women. In cases of complaints by women in which sex is an integral part, the Commission may initiate its own studies and investigations of the discriminatory practices and seek to resolve such matters through consultation, advise, referral and other actions.
*Conduct public hearings within the scope and function of the Commission at which testimony may be taken under oath. At any hearing before the Commission, anyone testifying shall be protected by due process of the law.
*Act as conciliator or mediator upon request to disputes or controversies within the scope of the Commission.
*Recommend necessary procedures, programs and/or legislation to promote and ensure equal rights and opportunities for all women.
*Request of any City or County department information, services, facilities, and any other assistance for the purpose of furthering the objectives of the Commission.
*Consult and cooperate with Federal, State, County, City and other public agencies and commissions on matters relevant to the Commission.
History:
The Commission was originally established by City Council Ordinance on December 8, 1975, after a year of work by a coalition of community women. In 1992, the City of Tucson and Pima County expanded the Women's Commission to become a joint City/County Commission.
The Women's Commission is specifically empowered to represent the rights and needs of the women of Tucson and Pima County, to investigate women's issues, to conduct hearings, to compile reports and to make recommendations to the Mayor & Council and to the Board of Supervisors. The Women's Commission is established as an official agency to promote equal opportunity in all aspects of life. More than 200 women and men of diverse backgrounds have served as Commissioners since the inception of the Women's Commission.
