The mission of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania is to collect, interpret and preserve significant objects related to Pennsylvania's railroading history and educating the public about that history through exhibits, special events, research, and other programs.
Description:
The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania is home to over 100 pieces of rolling stock equipment from the 19th and 20th centuries. The Museum presents its collection to the public in ways that are educational, informative, and entertaining. Volunteers at the Railroad Museum involve themselves in a number of different areas. Volunteers can choose between working out front, engaging with the visitors, or we have opportunities available behind the scenes. The Museum is a dynamic environment and we frequently have new and different ways in which to share our exhibits.
History:
The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania opened in April 1975. Eight years later, in 1983, the Friends of the Railroad Museum was organized to help provide support to the Museum. A major addition to the Museum was completed in 1995, which effectively doubled the size of our indoor collection space. In 1999, the Museum was able to add a Restoration facility to the property, allowing us to work on preserving our equipment on site. The Museum continues growing and expanding today!
