Museum docent (conducting tours of a house museum)
Last updated on June 13, 2008

Learn a short script and conduct 20 minute tours of the Old South Side Settlement Museum. Tours are given on Sundays from 11:30 a.m.-3:00 p.m. to visitors of the large ethnic farmers market we run directly across the street at Kosciuszko Park.

The area of the Old South Side (approximately Mitchell St. to Cleveland Ave. and 5th St. to 20th St.) is "Milwaukee's premier immigrant village." Over 25 nations are represented here--most from Latin America and Eastern Europe. Our Old South Side Settlement Museum celebrates the lives of immigrants that developed this neighborhood (and continue to develop) this neighborhood. Our rooms in this small house museum replicate those of some key families that lived here, including representatives of Polish, Kashubian, and Mexican immigrants. Tours of this museum tell their stories. The actual tour of this house museum is 45 minutes in length, but during the summer and early autumn we offer shortened tours of approximately 20 minutes to accommodate visitors of the farmer's market.

The volunteers would have to learn the short script (and they can reword parts in their own words). They should be expressive and friendly. It might help if they also know information about the South Side, in case of questions, but it is not necessary as another person will be there to help out. The docent must be extremely reliable.
