Civic Center Volunteers was founded in 1979, and is an internationally recognized innovative volunteer program. Last year we delivered more than 7 million dollars in services to the citizens of Marin. It's a great place to be a member of a team or to work quietly alone because we are so large a program (2,600 volunteers annually) there are vast opportunities no matter where you are in your life. extremely rewarding

I was contacted by Margaret Fisher of the M. County Children's Oral Health services to do screening of dental needs of children and adults at Pickleweed Park Community Center. Margaret is a wonderful hygienist who seems to spend all of her time helping poeople! I LOVED providing this screening with her, and if I were not working so many hours in a private dental practice, I would like do do more of it. I could see some needs for equipment that I think would GREATLY improve our ability to screen patients. If there is any way the county can get a portable xray unit, if we were careful with screening the patient (no pregnant women, and perhaps no children under 6?), and if we had a way to develope the radiographs, it would help immensely! I think I can locate some portable "lead walls" that are on rollers if need be. There were many people visiting the clinic who had obvious dental needs, such as teeth broken off at the gumline. But some had toothaches and no clinical manifestations. If we had a borrowed developer machine and could better assess these patients with radiographs, we could make better referrals. Some of these patients may have problems that we cannot see clinically, that perhaps are big enough that they should be referred to a hospital emergency room or other urgent care.(!) Also, we need to get some brochures that are typed in Spanish listing the locations (with driving diretions), hours of operation and services offered by the Santa Rosa Dental hygiene school, UCSF and UOP. If the volunteers already have those things, than disregard the remark. But I did look online today for information at these locations, but it was all in English!
