Save The Bay is the oldest and largest organization working exclusively to celebrate, protect and restore San Francisco Bay. At the core of this work is a commitment to improving the Bay's health while building and deepening Bay Area residents' connections to the Bay and strengthening community ties through watershed education and restoration programs.
Description:
Save The Bay provides Bay focused educational activities for thousands of residents around the Bay. These activities are available through our education programs that consist of our Community-Based Restoration Program, our Canoes-In-Sloughs program and our Discover the Bay program (canoe and kayaks). We offer these programs to school children, community groups and corporate groups. We maintain numerous strong partnerships with other non-profits, local state agencies, federal agencies, corporate partners, and community foundations. We are a member based organization with currently 10,000 members in the Bay area. We work to keep the Bay safe and clean for all residents to enjoy it. We advocate for limited development along the shoreline, more public access to the Bay, higher water quality, and wetlands protection.
History:
Save The Bay was established in 1961 as solely an advocacy organization. It was formed by three Berkeley women who opposed the idea of making the Bay into a river, fought this proposal in Sacramento and formed Save The Bay as a result. The issues we concentrated on during the first forty years were shoreline development, public access to the Bay, Bay fill, wetlands loss, and water quality. Our canoe and restoration programs came on line over the last six years and in that time we have engaged over 20,000 people in our restoration program alone, at six sites around the Bay. These volunteers have planted 70,000 native salt marsh plants, collected 20 tons of trash and removed 50 tons of non-native invasive weeds from our restoration sites. We have engaged 25,000 students and teachers in our Canoes In Sloughs program.
