Imagine being twelve years old and competing in an International Olympic Committee endorsed event. Not only are you competing against hundreds of children from across the world, but these competitors become your good friends! It's never about politics or race of other people. Instead you enjoy the thrill of sports competition and form friendships with kids all across the world. That makes this the most spectacular event of your childhood!
In the summer of 2008, from July 10 through 15, San Francisco will be hosting the 42nd annual International Children’s Games (ICG). The ICG, founded in 1968 and endorsed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), was established to promote peace and goodwill through children and their involvement in athletics.
Here's a quick summary.
• San Francisco will welcome 1300 athletes (ages 12 to 15), along with their coaches and city officials
• Approximately 90 cities from 50 different countries will be participating
• The athletes, both boys and girls, will put forth their personal best in 8 sports: basketball, soccer, swimming, tennis, track & field, table tennis, volleyball, and golf.
• Most of the sports venues will be held in the vicinity of Golden Gate Park (Sharon Meadows), University of San Francisco, and Kezar Stadium. These venues are within a brief walking distance of each other. Golf will be held at Harding Park (near Lake Merced).
You can participate in this exciting event by volunteering to assist with ICG. We are actively trying to recruit 1,000 volunteers to cover all aspects and functions of this event. Examples of volunteer roles range from interpreters, sporting events, liaisons, food services, security, ceremonies as well as many other facets of the event.
Benefits of volunteering:
• Admission to the “Olympic – themed” Opening Ceremonies
• Admission to Festival Village – a recreational area with food, games, and entertainment
• Commemorative International Children’s Games T-shirt
• Shuttle service
• Free lunch
