 The principal role of the intern would be to work on U Visa cases. These are immigration applications for victims of certain crimes (domestic violence, sexual assault, attempted murder, etc) who cooperate in the investigation and/or prosecution of the crime. Duties would include but are not limited to: o requesting police reports, filling out and requesting certification forms from police or district attorney, preparing cover letters and application packets, and translating client declarations from Spanish to English (if have Spanish skills). o researching the regulations and writing more complex cover letters for cases that fall outside the norm, but might still qualify. o researching and summarizing country conditions documentation and researching and writing cover letters for asylum applications. o Interviewing raid victims and drafting memos about possible motions to suppress
Hours: very flexible, part-time (15-20 hours per week), from September 15 to December 12, 2008. Prior coursework in immigration law helpful, but not required.
