During tax season several people from all kinds of professional backgrounds, such as CPA's, bookkeepers, retired engineers, college students, offer to volunteer as tax consultants to assist seniors in the community with their basic tax returns on a computer. All of these volunteers are given a one-day training seminar by the IRS to certify the volunteers as VITA tax consultants. Our tax volunteers then fan out to one of the several Whistlestop locations across the county to help low-income seniors fill out and file their basic taxes. Call Betty Dietz at 456.9062 ext. 134 to volunteer for this program. We provide all volunteers with a one-day training seminar put on by the IRS to certify the volunteers as VITA tax consultants. Volunteers should feel comfortable with basic math and following directions on State and Federal Tax Forms. Most volunteers work 4 to 5 hours on one work day each week during the tax season.
