The mission of the Somerville Homeless Coalition is to provide vulnerable individuals and families with personalized supportive services and tailored housing solutions. We are committed to treating people with dignity and respect, always with the understanding that they are part of our community.
Description:
Our target population is the homeless and poor people of Somerville and the surrounding towns that do not offer the services we provide. On a yearly basis, our two shelters serve approximately 130 people: 65 adult men and women in our Adult Shelter and 15 parents and 50 children in our Family Shelter. Seventy-eight of the adults are very low income and 34% of the women are head of their households. Our food pantries and community meals serve an average of 70 people every day, six days a week. We work with 200 individuals and families each year with case management services. Our newest programs all provide permanent housing to families and individuals in scattered site apartments in Somerville and the surrounding cities. We currently have 64 apartments serving 90 families and individuals and we are working to expand that resource.
History:
The Somerville Homeless Coalition started in 1985 and our first shelter opened in February of 1986. (Project SOUP, which runs food pantries, community meals, and other hunger related programs, joined the Coalition in 1996 but began in 1969 as the first community meal program in New England.) In 1987 we open the first and only family shelter in Somerville. Our first federal grant in 1997(from HUD) allows us to provide case management services to all the homeless individuals and families in Somerville. Since 2001, we have opened five housing programs and now have 64 apartments scattered around the area for both families and individuals.
