The Revolving Museum is an evolving laboratory of creative expression for people of all backgrounds, ages, and abilities who seek to experience the transformative power of art. Through public art, exhibitions, and educational programs we promote artistic exploration and appreciation; encourage community participation and growth; and provide opportunities for empowerment and social change.
Description:
The Revolving Museum’s philosophy is that art can be not only an inspiring endeavor for individuals personally but also that it can be a catalyst for social change, educational achievement and civic dialogue. Through public art, exhibitions, special events and educational programs, we create conversation and exchange between artists and under-served youth on the one hand and the larger community on the other. This cumulative dialogue has led to many successful programs for Lowell’s youth, partnerships, social service projects, community revitalization, as well as and an extraordinary contribution of public art for the city of Lowell.
History:
The Revolving Museum is a community arts organization located in Lowell whose mission is to serve Lowell’s underserved young people through an array of experiential education and public art programs. It was founded in twelve abandoned railroad cars in 1984 by Jerry Beck, an artist with an extensive history creating public artworks with community and youth. Originally an artists' collaborative located in Boston, the RM moved to Lowell in 2002 and obtained its own building at that time as well. Since its arrival in Lowell the RM has forged an array of successful partnerships and collaborative relationships with local banks and businesses, City of Lowell agencies, social service organizations and a diversity of grassroots and other groups.
