The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) is the only national not-for-profit organization exclusively dedicated to understanding and preventing suicide through research and education, and to reaching out to people with mood disorders and those affected by suicide.
Description:
AFSP provides many educational trainings and community events designed to raise awareness about suicide prevention, survivor support and research. In 2004 AFSP launched our national signature event the "Out of the Darkness Community Walk" in Boston and Springfield. Each year this event brings together survivors and concerned members of your community to help reduce the stigma around suicide and raise awareness about prevention while raising for programs, education and research. Our many volunteer opportunities include advocacy, fundraising, event planning and management, and volunteer management.
History:
In 1987, a number of leading experts on suicide came together with business and community leaders and survivors of suicide to form the AFSP, a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. They believed that only a combined effort would make it possible to fund the research necessary for progress in the prevention of suicide. Such an approach has proven successful with heart disease, cancer and diabetes and it was hoped that it would be successful in dealing with depression and suicide. In 1990 the NorthEast Chapter (now the Greater Boston Chapter) was begun. This chapter served much of New England for the past 16 years. In 2004 the first AFSP regional office was opened in Boston, MA. The Western MA Chapter received its charter in October of 2005.
