Hospice volunteers provide companionship to hospice patients within the home, nursing care facilities, or in assisted living residences.
Hospice volunteers do not provide physical care but may read to patients, assist them in some social activities, walk with individuals, write letters, read to them, listen to music and provide other "fulfilling" activities.
Respite care and support to caregivers are also sometimes provided by volunteer staff to allow caregivers a chance for some rest and relaxation from their caregiver role.

Training is provided by the agency, individuals must undergo a "CORI" (criminal background check, a TB test yearly, as well as attend additional trainings and meetings periodically. Millage reimbursement is provided for patient visits.
