Children's Discovery Museum

Last updated on October 18, 2007

The Children's Discovery Museum was founded on the premise of education through play. The Museum is committed to the belief children learn best through a “hands-on”, interactive approach. Exhibits, family programs, summer camps, and community events encourage role-play, exploration, experimentation and, ultimately, the discovery that learning is fun!

Description:
The Children's Discovery Museum consists of many different exhibits for a child to learn through play. Examples of these exhibits include a play restaurant where kids can learn the importance of good nutrition while having fun making pretend sandwiches and healthy wraps. There is a pretend bank where kids can withdraw fun money and work online with a financial literacy program aimed at teaching children about banking. There is a grocery store, a multi-cultural music area, a Maine author's reading loft and a theater and a rainforest with live animals. Educational programs will also be offered as well as other services such as birthday parties.

History:
The Children's Discovery Museum (CDM)incorporated in 1984 under the leadership of Julie O'Brien. CDM began with traveling exhibits in classrooms and other venues. It opened its doors to the community on August 1, 1992, at its current location in the historic Vickery Building, which overlooks the Kennebec River in downtown Augusta. In 1995, a Capital Campaign, led by then Mayor John Bridge, raised over $250,000 for an expansion that doubled the Museum’s exhibit space. In January 2006, financial problems as well as the resignation of it's founder Julie O'Brien led the Board of Directors to make the difficult decision to temporarily close the Museum, with the intent to reorganize and renovate the exhibits. In February of 2006 renovations started and now the museum is on the verge of being complete and ready to reopen it's doors.
