HART's mission is to provide refuge, comfort, and medical attention to cats and kittens that have been surrendered, abandoned, injured, or abused, and to place them in loving, carefully-chosen homes.
Description:
HART (Homeless Animal Rescue Team) is a completely volunteer organization that provides a safe refuge to hundreds of homeless cats each year. The cats are not confined in cages, but live in an open environment in various rooms where they are free to play, climb, nest, and form bonds with one another. HART relies primarily on the support of individual donors to help financially with the costs of providing food and shelter for cats and kittens, and to assist with the rescue of cats in need. Volunteers are always needed to clean the cat rooms, give food and clean water, clean litter boxes, foster kittens, help with fund raising, transporting cats to veterinarians for their spay/neuter appointments or to get medical treatment, computer work, filing and administrative duties. People interested in adopting a cat or kitten can contact HART for an appointment and a tour at their convenience. The shelter is open for drop-in visits on the first Saturday of every month from 11:00 to 3:00.
HART is pleased and proud to announce that we were selected by the Maine Animal Control Association as Shelter of the Year for 2006! Receiving this award is truly an honor. The award recognizes the dedication of all of our volunteers who work tirelessly for the well being of our cats and the operation of our shelter!
History:
HART's adoption center and shelter, built in 2004, is located at 302 Range Rd., on the corner of Range Rd. and Route 26/100 in Cumberland. HART was founded in 1997 by Eileen Smith and was formerly located in a renovated barn at her private residence in Cumberland. Volunteers joined her to help with the cats. She later moved out of state, but she allowed HART to continue operating the shelter from her property. HART's volunteers took on the responsibility of running the shelter and was officially reorganized, becoming a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation. The shelter has grown from handling 84 adoptions in 2003, 216 in 2004, 320 adoptions in 2005, to over 500 in 2006. We have already exceeded the 2006 number as of the beginning of November, with 2 months left to go. All with a volunteer staff.
