The Ronald McDonald House of Portland, Maine, Inc., provides a home away from home for families of critically ill children being treated in area hospitals. For the family whose child has been diagnosed with leukemia or whose teenager has been in a catastrophic accident or whose baby was born prematurely, the Ronald McDonald House remains a special place to call home during their children's often-lengthy hospitalizations.

Description:
We are a 21-bedroom facility, offering comfortable accommodations, home-cooked meals, and the chance to meet other families facing similar situations.

The small staff of the Ronald McDonald House is assisted by a wonderful group of volunteers performing various duties, from doing a 3 hour shift weekly or every-other-week to managing the House for an entire weekend twice a year.

Shift volunteers answer the phone and door, check families in and out, do light housekeeping, perform office tasks, and lend an ear to families who want to talk.

History:
The Ronald McDonald House of Portland opened its doors in May of 1995, thanks to the efforts of a core group of founding volunteers and many other who helped. Since the House opened, it has provided comfort and temporary housing to over 2,300 families during a stressful time.
