MAPS Shelter Services goal is to provide a safe environment for homeless, pregnant, and /or parenting women and their children while offering training and resources to help our clients attain life skills that will lead to healthy independent living free from government assistance.
Description:
MAPS Shelter Services provides private bedrooms with shared bathrooms, communal kitchen and living facilities and telephones. Services include case management and ongoing life skills training, along with referrals to permanent housing, birthing classes, parenting education, public health nursing services, counseling, transportation and child care.
India Street apartments are located at 107 India St. in Portland, and is transitional housing for low-income single mothers with children who are eligible for Section-8. The brick building houses four, separate furnished apartments. Women who live there build self-sufficiency. Casework support is available to help each resident with identifying and reaching long term goals for parenting, education, and employment.
History:
The MY CHOICE program began in Portland in 1987 to help pregnant women who were in crisis in the community. In 1989, the shelter opened to provide safe housing. In 2007, the Shelter was renamed MAPS Shelter Services. In 2001, "Virginia's Place," a transitional housing program, opened to extend the amount of time residents could remain participating in the program's education and support services. This location is now called India Street Apartments.
