The Children's Advocacy Council promotes the wellbeing of children and families and leads the community in preventing and addressing child abuse and neglect.
Description:
The Council offers training and education to all those who work with children; assesses community needs and convenes collaborations to improve services to children and families; and creates parent education and support opportunities. The Council also helps schools, child care centers, and other organizations create reporting policies and procedures, and solve problems and concerns that may arise while they are working with children. Finally, the Council acts as a resource to help parents and others find resources for their children, and acts as a catalyst in the community to advocate for better services for children and families when needed.
History:
The Council was convened 25 years ago by the United Way, Dept. of Human Services, and community members in an effort to get others in the community involved in the prevention of child abuse and neglect. It has acted in collaboration with other agencies to help improve the lives of children in Cumberland County by doing a wide variety of activities through education, training, and networking. It does not deliver direct service to children and families, though it has been a part of Youth Alternatives since 1997, which has a continuum of services for families ranging from parent education and support, to family mediation and outreach, to home-based services to families, to foster care and group home care. In 2005, the Council changed its name from the Cumberland County Child Abuse and Neglect Council to Children's Advocacy Council.
