To provide temporary care and shelter for stray, abandoned and relinquished animals, and to place as many as possible into responsible and caring homes.

To create awareness and support for the humane treatment of all animals.

To end animal overpopulation through education and the promotion of spaying and neutering.

Description:
The Animal Refuge League takes in over 4,000 animals per year from 13 contracting towns in the Greater Portland area. We strive to make any animals stay with us as stress free as possible by giving them a clean, loving environment. We have one of the highest placement rates of any shelter in Maine, on average, over 85% of the animals that come to us are placed. We are a resource to many pet owners in our area on a variety of pet related issues. We also offer assistance to low income households for Spaying/Neutering.

History:
The Animal Refuge League was established in 1911 on India Street in Portland. Governor Percival Baxter then funded a new shelter in 1928, and again in 1956 when it was moved to its current rural location in Westbrook.

Governor Baxter felt that humanity had an obligation towards creatures of the animal kingdom. He worked hard at turning the corner to stem the cruelty, indifference and neglect to man's canine and feline friends. He was proud of the Baxter Shelter, a place of special love and special people. For dogs and cats it is place of hope, with a goal to care for them as humanely as possible until they can be reunited with their owners or until someone chooses to adopt them. The ARL continues to thrive because of the vision, significant gifts, other benefactors and the continuing generosity and support of the general public.
