Literacy Volunteers is a nonprofit organization that works to improve reading, writing, and related literacy skills of adults and their families. Programs are free, private, and confidential. Trained volunteer tutors help learners identify needs and achieve their personal literacy goals.

Description:
Our volunteers from all walks of life are trained and available to teach adults basic reading, basic math, even simple computer use, and can assist individuals to improve their skills to achieve their personal goals.

Often our students only want to read to their children, understand labels on a can of vegetables, or make out simple traffic signs. Others need help so that they can obtain a GED, a driver's license, or certification in the vocation of their choice. Some desire to read Stephen King, others a prayer book or the Bible. We tutor individuals whose native language is not English and help them to acclimate to our culture and customs.

Our tutors often develop strong friendships with their students and assist them at different stages of their lives as mentors and study coaches. In addition, our volunteers read to shut-ins and patients at nursing or rest homes, bringing to them the priceless enjoyment of the written word.

History:
Literacy Volunteers of Waldo County has been in continuous operation since 1986. In 1998 we opened an office and learning center in Belfast at 9 Field Street. A few years ago we were the recipients of a Libra Grant that helped LVWC to incorporate computer-assisted learning into our program.
